Cambodia Cracks Down on Fake and Used Telecom Equipment
13 October 2026

Cambodia’s telecom regulator, the TRC, is taking action against fake and second-hand telecom products coming into the country. In a new announcement, it says businesses that import, supply or sell this kind of equipment must start following the rules or face penalties.

What the TRC wants

Companies dealing in telecom equipment must meet three requirements:

Qualified Agent (QA) certificate: businesses must be registered with the TRC as a qualified agent.

Type Approval (TA): every product must hold a valid TRC type approval.

Import Permit (IP): shipments must be covered by the right import permit.

Businesses affected by the announcement have 60 days to apply for a QA certificate. From now on, they may only sell brand-new equipment that comes from a clear, legal source and carries TRC type approval.

What happens to those who don’t comply

The TRC has made it clear that it will act. Penalties include confiscation of goods, fines and the closure of websites used to advertise the products.

Why this matters

For genuine manufacturers and their distributors, this is good news. Fake and used devices undercut legal products on price, and they often cause network problems or safety risks. Stricter checks should give approved products a fairer chance in the market.

The flip side is that paperwork now matters more than ever. A missing approval or an expired permit could leave even genuine products stuck at customs.
