Italy Considers Extending Mobile Spectrum Licences Until 2037
13 October 2026

Italy’s mobile operators may get eight more years on their current spectrum licences. AGCOM, the country’s communications regulator, has opened a public consultation on the idea.

Most of these licences are due to run out at the end of 2029. Under the new proposal, they would stay valid until 31 December 2037. The plan covers most of the bands that carry Italy’s 4G and 5G traffic:

800 MHz

900 MHz

1500 MHz

1800 MHz

2100 MHz

2600 MHz

3400–3600 MHz

AGCOM is also looking at whether to extend the 28 GHz licences used for fixed wireless access, the service that delivers home broadband over radio instead of cable.

Why is AGCOM doing this?

Building a 5G network costs a lot of money, and operators are slow to spend it when they don’t know how long they’ll keep their frequencies. A longer licence period gives them a clearer picture. AGCOM says the plan should encourage investment, avoid any break in service when the current licences end, and make sure the spectrum is put to good use.

What does it mean for equipment makers?

When operators feel secure about their future, they tend to upgrade their networks. That usually brings more demand for base stations, routers, fixed wireless terminals, smartphones and other radio equipment. Every one of those products still has to meet EU rules before it can be sold in Italy. If you plan to sell telecom or radio equipment there, it’s worth getting your compliance in order now, before demand picks up.
