Sri Lanka Moves Equipment Clearance Online with TRCSL’s New ECS Platform
09/20/2026

Getting telecom equipment cleared in Sri Lanka used to mean emails, scanned forms and a fair amount of waiting. The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) is changing that with its Equipment Clearance System (ECS), an online portal that brings the main equipment approvals into one place.
What the platform covers
According to TRCSL, ECS handles three types of requests:
- Type approval for radio and telecom terminal equipment, under the RTTE Type Approval Rules 2020 (Extraordinary Gazette No. 2196/51)
- Short range device clearances, covering low-power products like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices
- Clearances for IMEI devices such as mobile phones
Vendor licensees, individuals and companies can all use the system. Local media also report that it connects with Sri Lanka Customs and the Controller of Imports and Exports, and that applicants can track the status of their request and get SMS and email updates.
When does it become mandatory?
ECS isn't brand new. Vendors were onboarded in stages from late 2025. What has changed recently is the wider rollout. Sri Lankan media report that from 1 October 2026, all type approval, IMEI and non-IMEI clearance requests will need to go through ECS. We haven't seen that date in an official TRCSL notice yet, so treat it as the expected date for now, but it's sensible to be ready before then.
Practical points for vendors
- Each vendor licence needs its own email address. One login can't manage several vendors, so if one person handles multiple licences, set up separate accounts.
- You'll be asked to change your password the first time you log in.
- TRCSL has published a vendor training manual for the portal. It's worth a read before you submit your first application.
- For help, TRCSL's ECS helpdesk is at ecshelpdesk@trc.gov.lk.
As far as we can tell, the technical requirements themselves haven't changed. It's the way applications are submitted that has moved online. For most manufacturers and importers that's good news: fewer emails, more visibility, and hopefully faster turnaround.
If you're planning to launch devices in Sri Lanka, we can handle the process end-to-end. See our guide to Sri Lanka TRCSL type approval.
