Understanding NTRA Type Approval: Key to Selling Your Product in Egypt

The Egypt National Regulatory Authority (NTRA) governs telecommunication and radio equipment to ensure that they comply with Egyptian national standards before their import, sale, and use in the country.

In order to simplify the process based on product origin, type and risk-assessment for approvals, NTRA has enacted three separate approval schemes regarding new equipment using:

(i)Light Type Approval Scheme

1. This is the least complex of the three schemes and applies to products that present a low level of regulatory risk. It accepts certificates issued from accredited international bodies like ISO, i.e. testing for EMC by issuing authority (such as EU or US) or it can be fulfilled with the following:

  • Manufacturing Plant, within EU countries, UK, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland; or any of: Australia & New Zealand; USA & Canada; Russia; Japan & South Korea and Singapore or Taiwan/ PRC.

2. Branch of manufacturer located outside India and China and that Branch is ISO Certified in the product R&D and manufacturing area:

  • ISO certificate from certification body based EU countries, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand USA Canada Russia Japan South Korea Singapore or (Taiwan/ PRC).

(ii) Intermediate Type Approval Scheme

If the manufacturing plant is located outside India and China for the light type approval scheme criteria mentioned above, then intermedia Type approval scheme kicks-in with some additional documentation and due diligence requirements.

(iii) Tight Type Approval Scheme

This tight type approval scheme is applicable for products, where stringent criteria stated above in Light Type approval scheme is not satisfied and the location of Manufacturing Plant in either China or India. It includes certain additional conditions, such as issuance of test reports and accreditation.

Required Documents for Type Approval

There are essential documents and materials to be provided for NTRA Type Approval in Egypt. These include:

  • Technical Documentation: for the Device which includes user guide, specification or data sheets and operating description to have proper awareness about device.

  • DoC or Declaration of conformity: A statement that indicates how the device complies with relevant standards.

  • Standard Test Report for RF, EMC, Health and Safety: A report that details the results of Radio Frequency(RF), Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), health and safety testing according to relevant standards.

  • GSMA TAC Letter: This is needed for cellular devices, and this letter indicates that GSMA has assigned an individual Type Allocation Code (TAC) to the device.

  • ISO Certificates: Evidence of adherence to ISO standards from the manufacturer.

  • EU-Type Examination Certificate: This is a certificate that shows the device passed through type testing in accordance with EU characteristics.
